NYTimes: On Register’s Other Side, Little to Spend

Above is an article that gives credence to something that I have  been saying for quite some years now. As manufacturing heads over seas, and factories here in the U.S. of A. close down we have become a society of part-time retail employees. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with working in Retail. I myself did it for many many years before settling in to my profession (if you can call it a profession). However, due to many many external things, the Retailer of today seems to get the short end of the stick.
For one, as the cost of Health Care has continually risen for years upon years, more and more businesses (in this case I can mostly refer to my customers but do read the Trades and see that the box stores are doing much of the same) are cutting the average employees hours to just under the minimum allowed where they won’t have to supply or offer Health Insurance.
Another is the American Dream of owning ones own house. Since the Bank crash 5 or 6 years ago, it is very hard to get a mortgage. And let’s face it, if you are working partime in retail than how do you expect a bank to give you a mortgage.
Which leads us to renting. The cost of renting apartments and homes has gone up steadily as the forclosure rate has gone up. I don’t think that I have to explain that one to anyone.
Lastly, don’t believe what you read in the papers, hear on the news, or what the Politians are saying the Depression is not over nor will it be for some time to come. What took us decades to do will take more than a few years to pull out of.
That’s it for now.
Have a good night and a pleasant tomorrow.
Dave
